Coal is transported into the plant by way of five different conveyors. Before it enters the plant, the coal is tested for heat value, sulfur content, and other important qualities and is crushed further. Pieces of iron that are inadvertently shipped with the coal is separated.
Once the coal is in the building, it is stored in large "bunkers" and used as needed.
Four coal feeders measure the amount of coal needed to make electricity and feed the measured coal into a coal pulverizer. Once the coal is in the pulverizer, it is crushed into a fine power. After it is crushed into a fine powder, it is blown into the boiler by the pulverizer exhausters. The amount of coal pulverized and blown into the boiler varies as the electric power needs of GIUD customers change, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
