Shown at left is a Platte Generating Station coal handler opening doors under a coal car. The coal dumps from the car through large grates and then into a large hopper called the track hopper. Shown at the right are two PGS coal handlers shoveling coal under the rail car after the doors on the bottom of the coal car are opened.  Employees are vigilant in the use of personal protective gear while unloading coal.  At the bottom of the hopper is a conveyor belt that transports the coal to storage or directly to the main boiler. On the average, Platte Generating Station burns about 10 car loads (100 tons per car) of coal per day to provide electricity for Grand Island Utilities customers.
