This is the turbine-generator at Platte Generating Station. It is rated to produce 100 megawatts of electricity.
The far rectangular (left) section in the photo is the turbine end. The turbine is located under this cover and inside a thick, heavy turbine casing. The steam entering the turbine from the main boiler is 1,800 pounds per square inch pressure and is 1,000 degrees F.
The cylindrical (right) section is the generator end. It is connected directly to the turbine with a 12 inch hardened steel shaft. Both the turbine and the generator turn exactly 3,600 revolutions per minute. The generator is rated at 100 mega watts, (enough power to illuminate one million 100 watt light bulbs).
The turbine generator at PGS operates continuously (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) for periods of six months. The turbine generator is "shut down" only for a week twice a year to complete required maintenance of the steam boiler.
