Shown below is the first turbine-generator owned by Grand Island Light, Water and Ice Department. The steam turbine-generator was installed in 1913 and featured a maximum generator output of 500 kilo-watts (500,000 watts). It was manufactured by Allis-Chalmers of West Allis, Wisconsin.
Grand Island owned and operated two units before this one, however, they were piston engine driven - flywheel type generators.
Grand Island Utilities Department's modern power generators are driven with steam turbines and similar to the one pictured below except much larger producing up to 100,000 kilo-watts (100,000,000 watts). No only do our newer units produce much more electricity, they produce the electricity with far greater efficiently, and with far fewer emissions.
