The Grand Island Utilities Department Water Division's primary job is to maintain Grand Island's domestic water distribution system for fire protection, household and industrial uses.  The water division repairs water main leaks and breaks, maintains fire hydrants, installs   "taps" (hook ups to existing water mains), thaws frozen water pipes in the winter, and installs and provide water meters that are connected to the distribution system.   

The Grand Island Utilities Department Water Division strives to design and maintain  a dependable water system.  A well trained and experienced staff are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week to ensure that Grand Island water customers are provided with a plentiful supply of safe, high quality, great tasting water!

Shown above is the newly renovated GIUD Water Department.  The building formally housed the Pine Street Power Plant, home of GIUD's first electric power generators.   The renovation of the Pine Street Station is an example of GIUD's commitment to preserving the architectural character of downtown Grand Island.

The distribution system serves 14,100 customers.  To serve our customers, GIUD's  Water Division maintains   238.1 miles of water lines and 2,128 valves.  In addition to supplying potable water  GIUD supplies water for fire protection.   There are 1,820 fire hydrants connected to the GIUD water distribution system.

To supply water to the distribution system, three storage reservoirs and seven high pressure wells are used.  The total storage of three reservoirs is 10,000,000 gallons.  Each reservoir has it's own pressurizing station or pumping station with two high flow, high pressure pumps.  The reservoirs are filled with well water supplied from GIUD's Platte River well field.  Sixteen wells located at the well field supply water to a basin located at the well field.  Four high capacity low pressure pumps then fill the reservoirs.  Below is a list showing the flow of water to GIUD's customers. 

A fleet of red Water Department trucks stand ready to serve GIUD water customers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 
Water is pumped from 16 wells located at the Platte River well field.
Water from the 16 wells enter a basin.  Four high capacity, low pressure pumps provide water via a series of transmission lines totaling 15 miles to each of GIUD's three storage reservoirs.
Water stored in the reservoirs is pressurized by a pumping station located near each reservoir.  Each pumping station has two high capacity, high pressure pumps. 
The high capacity, high pressure pumps located at each reservoir pump water, with chlorine added, into the distribution system. 
Chlorinated water from seven high pressure wells located throughout Grand Island supply additional water to the distribution system.
Water in the distribution system flows through a 235 mile system of supply lines, controlled by 2,128 valves. 
"Taps" or pipes that attach to the water distribution system supply potable water for 13,000 customers in Grand Island and supplies water to Grand Island's 1,820 fire hydrants.

To maintain this complex network of water lines, fire hydrants, valves and meters, and to supply  connections for new customers, GIUD employs dedicated and experienced people to keep the water running.   Whenever there is a problem, some one is ready to address the problem, in any kind of weather, any time of year, 24 hours a day!

GIUD maintains a large supply of water system parts so that maintenance and emergency repairs can be completed in a timely manner.
