Burdick steam unit 3 fires natural gas or number 6 fuel oil.  While natural gas is the most frequently used fuel for use in boilers to produce steam at Burdick Station, number 6 fuel oil, a thick oil that resembles roofing tar can be burned  to produce steam as well.
Number 6 fuel oil is used as "standby" fuel at Burdick Station when natural gas is in short supply. Over 2,000,000 gallons of oil is stored in tanks near the plant. Shown at left are pipes that supply the three boilers with oil.
Burdick Steam Unit 3 features a recent upgrade of the boiler controls and turbine to ensure safe and efficient operating performance, and low emissions.
